Rumsfeld was corrosive, his leadership on Iraq was beyond appalling, and his resignation is most satisfying—both because it was so uncomfortable for Bush and because it was so difficult for Rumsfeld. I must say, however, that do I agree with him about this, though:
… this little-understood, unfamiliar war, the first war of the 21st century — it is not well-known, it was not well-understood; it is complex for people to comprehend.
And I know with certainty that, over time, the contributions [Bush has] will be recorded by history.
And I have one other deep worry: Rumsfeld is the only Bush administration official who has discussed the importance of the information war. I hope he’s not the only one fixated on it, because then we’re really screwed. Nothing is more important than managing our image—including during this election cycle—and it’s is a 24/7 job, and it needs to be covered from every angle.
I wrote about this most recently here.
